What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo celebrates a Mexican Army victory over the French Army. This battle took place in Puebla, Mexico on May 5, 1862. People remember this battle against the French because the Mexican Army was not as prepared as the French Army. The Mexican Army had fewer soldiers, guns, and very little military training. While this battle did not win the war between the two countries, it did show the courage of Mexican soldiers.
How is it Celebrated?
People in the United States and Puebla, Mexico celebrate Cinco de Mayo with parades, parties, and delicious food. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has turned into a celebration of rich Mexican culture and heritage. One common mistake made by most people, is that they believe Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day. That information is incorrect. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. They are two completely separate events and celebrations.
